What is RFID

06/06/2006 | Radio Frequency Identification Technology or RFID technology is an extremely powerful and cost effective technology that allows a wide range of objects (including people) to be automatically identified, tracked and managed without any human intervention. It provides a contact-less data link, without need for line of sight or concerns about harsh or dirty environments that restrict other auto ID technologies such as barcodes.RFID technology is based on the use of small tags that vibrate to generate radio waves in a desired wavelength and frequency or transponders and readers for connection to an information system. The tag includes a chip and an integrated antenna which is activated by a radio signal with preset frequency which in return sends a signal to the activator. The reader/encoder acting as a transceiver can read and write information on the chip. Tags are data carriers unlike barcode labels which are ID's only.Tags can be produced in any shape that suits the chosen application and easily integrated into the item to be tracked.

06/06/2006 | Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has reached a new height in awareness. Even though this technology has been around for many years, it is only now businesses are realizing its potential. The growth and new highest in supporting this technology were not available years before - to make the RFID technology valuable. Storing a considerable amount of information in an easily available medium and transmitting it in a reasonable amount of time.

06/06/2006 | It is now realized there isn't a single application that RFID technology can not be applied to and it is also realized that RFID technology benefits more than any other identification technology. It has emerged as the ideal solution for various tracking applications such as Asset Tracking, Inventory Tracking, Patient Tracking, Pharma Tracking and Tracking raw materials in addition to Supply Chain and industrial automation. It has an additional edge over the traditional UPC barcode systems which require that the products to be at the line of sight. It allows businesses to store the complete history of products and track them in various part of the world.

06/06/2006 | Most companies are aggressively adopting RFID technology for managing security, access control, logistics and real-time information With increasing business benefits, decreasing costs and more and more applications and solutions becoming available, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is steadily finding acceptance and adoption across verticals. Retail ports, industries, warehouses , parking lots, toll roads, travel/car fleet units, banks, airports, judiciary and government are a few of the significant adopters of this technology. While priorities vary for industries, the bottom line expectations essentially stay the same. Most companies are aggressively adopting RFID technology for managing security, access control, logistics as well as real time information access and update with tags, sensors, readers and state-of-the-art business application systems.RFID uses radio frequency waves to transfer data between a reader/scanner and a movable item to identify, track or locate it. RFID does not require physical sight or contact between the reader and the tagged item, making it more efficient than traditional bar codes. However, it is not merely a better substitute for bar codes, RFID as a technology has varied applications across industries and business functions.

Inventory Tracking

06/06/2006 |In the retail industry RFID is primarily used in inventory control. In a retail outlet all stocked items contain an inexpensive read-only tag that stores the product code and its description, including the manufacturer, brand, batch number, expiry date and price. The shelves, exit gates and warehouses are fitted with a small antenna that senses the RFID tags and reads the information to update the inventory system on a real-time basis. The benefits of such a system are the provisions for total asset visibility, full inventory history with tracking and reduced inventory-stocking levels that facilitate "just-in-time" deliveries. It also ensures better process control for products in the facility, reduced shelf space and lead-time that shorten across docking time, higher-level security, fewer errors and better visibility of goods material.

06/06/2006 | Managing patient flow is one of the hot topics for any hospital. Being able to locate staff in emergencies can save lives. Plus, being able to know at any time where a medical device can be found makes all the difference. Today's tracking technologies can generate significant cost savings derived from more accurate data collection. This includes the passive collection of data concurrent with the seamless flow of patient information throughout the hospital experience. The goal when implementing any of these systems should include automatic information collection to allow for improving quality of care, improving productivity, reducing redundancy in processes, decreasing errors, reducing overall operating costs, while increasing rapid availability of essential information, all without placing additional demands on the caregiver.

06/06/2006 |Organizations everywhere have a variety of reasons for implementing this technology within their supply chains ranging from meeting the mandates of major retailers and the Department of Defense all the way to reorganizing logistics operations to realize operational performance gains. And while RFID will likely have a substantial impact on supply chain in the years to come, adopting an incremental approach today will prove most effective as RFID technology requirements continue to evolve.

RFID Supply chain

06/06/2006 | Wal-Mart has tapped RFID as the technology that will help them limit out-of-stocks, allow supply chain visibility in real or "near-real" time, and reduce costs and labor. The benefit for Wal-Mart is clear: higher costs and poor inventory control in the supply chain do not help anyone, especially the largest retailer. With Wal-Mart selling over $245 billion worth of goods in fiscal year 2003, a 1% improvement in the out-of-stock issue could generate nearly $2.5 billion in very profitable sales. However, what is the incentive for their suppliers? One of the primary benefits conveyed to Wal-Mart's supply chain partners is the additional sales revenue that suppliers can generate due to improved out-of-stock levels. Next, lower operating costs can be realized through labor reduction and improved business processes.

Challenges in RFID

06/06/2006 | RFID technology has many benefits over the traditional tracking system mainly because of its ability to track items without the line of sight. The interrogator sends RF signal to the tagged items and receive the information it was looking for as long as they can receive the RF signals from the interrogator. But making the RF signal reach the tagged items and interrogator is not that simple and there are many environmental factors that impact this RF communication.
